BMW and MINI Engine Oil Filter Housing Investigation (Detailed)

Our firm is reviewing reported concerns involving certain BMW and MINI vehicles equipped with B46, B48, and B58 engines relating to alleged premature failure of the engine oil filter housing assembly.

Reports reviewed to date indicate that certain affected vehicles may experience cracking, warping, coolant leaks, oil leaks, contamination between oil and coolant systems, overheating, and other engine-related issues allegedly associated with the engine oil filter housing. Reports further indicate that repairs may be costly and may require replacement of the oil filter housing assembly and related components.

If you have experienced coolant leaks, oil leaks, overheating, oil filter housing failure, engine warning lights, or related concerns, you may contact us confidentially and free of charge. No lawsuit has been filed and no class proceeding has been certified in British Columbia.

Potential Automotive Class Proceeding Under Investigation:
BMW and MINI Engine Oil Filter Housing Defect

Our firm is currently investigating a potential Canada-wide class proceeding, including in British Columbia, concerning certain:

– BMW 1 Series (2014–2021)
– BMW 2 Series (2014–2021)
– BMW 3 Series (2014–2021)
– BMW 4 Series (2014–2021)
– BMW 5 Series (2014–2021)
– BMW X1 (2014–2021)
– BMW X2 (2014–2021)
– BMW X3 (2014–2021)
– BMW X4 (2014–2021)
– MINI Cooper (2014–2021)
– MINI Clubman (2014–2021)
– MINI Countryman (2014–2021)

equipped with BMW's B46, B48, or B58 engines.

According to reports reviewed to date, certain affected vehicles may contain an allegedly defective engine oil filter housing assembly constructed from polycarbonate materials. It is alleged that repeated heating and cooling cycles may cause portions of the housing and associated seals to deteriorate, crack, warp, or otherwise fail prematurely.

Reports reviewed to date indicate that the alleged condition may result in:

– Engine oil leaks;
– Coolant leaks;
– Mixing of oil and coolant;
– Loss of coolant;
– Engine overheating;
– Engine warning messages;
– Reduced vehicle reliability; and
– Costly repairs.

We are reviewing allegations that the engine oil filter housing may fail significantly earlier than consumers reasonably expect and that replacement costs may range from several thousand dollars depending on the vehicle and extent of resulting damage.

Reports reviewed to date further indicate that some aftermarket suppliers have developed aluminum replacement oil filter housings intended to replace the original plastic design.

We are also reviewing whether oil filter housing failures may lead to secondary engine damage if coolant loss, overheating, oil contamination, or lubrication issues are not detected and addressed promptly.

In certain circumstances, the reported condition may ultimately result in catastrophic engine failure requiring extensive engine repairs or engine replacement.

Our investigation is reviewing whether the reported condition may materially impair vehicle reliability, durability, value, utility, and expected service life.

This investigation is ongoing and is being conducted to determine whether the legal requirements under British Columbia's Class Proceedings Act are met, including whether common issues exist and whether a class proceeding would be the preferable procedure.

If you own or lease an affected BMW or MINI vehicle and have experienced coolant leaks, oil leaks, oil filter housing failure, overheating, engine damage, or related concerns, you may contact us to share your experience. Providing information is confidential, free of charge, and does not obligate you to retain our firm or participate in any legal proceeding.

This page will be updated as our investigation progresses.
