Honda Odyssey Airbag Deployment Investigation (Detailed)
Our firm is reviewing reported concerns involving certain 2018–2022 Honda Odyssey vehicles relating to alleged defects affecting the vehicles’ side curtain and side thorax airbag systems.
According to publicly available allegations and consumer reports, certain vehicles may experience spontaneous airbag deployment events without a collision, including while driving under ordinary road conditions.
Reports reviewed to date indicate that some deployments allegedly occurred while vehicles traversed minor road irregularities such as potholes or speed bumps, while slowing to a stop, or in some cases without any discernible triggering event.
Owners have further reported concerns involving loud explosive deployment events, impaired visibility, chemical odors or fumes, and sudden loss of confidence in vehicle safety following deployment.
If you have experienced spontaneous airbag deployment or related SRS issues in a 2018–2022 Honda Odyssey, you may contact us confidentially and free of charge.
No lawsuit has been filed and no class proceeding has been certified in British Columbia.
Potential Automotive Class Proceeding Under Investigation:
Honda Odyssey Spontaneous Airbag Deployment Defect (2018–2022)
Our firm is currently investigating a potential Canada-wide class proceeding, including in British Columbia, concerning certain:
– 2018 Honda Odyssey
– 2019 Honda Odyssey
– 2020 Honda Odyssey
– 2021 Honda Odyssey
– 2022 Honda Odyssey
vehicles allegedly affected by defects involving the vehicles’ Supplemental Restraint System (“SRS”) and side airbag systems.
According to allegations contained in publicly available court filings, certain affected vehicles may experience unexpected deployment of side curtain and side thorax airbags without a crash event, potentially exposing occupants to sudden explosive force and impairing safe vehicle operation.
The allegations reviewed to date state that spontaneous deployments may occur:
– While driving under ordinary road conditions;
– Following contact with potholes or minor road irregularities;
– While slowing to a stop; or
– In some cases, while stationary.
The investigation is reviewing allegations that the vehicles’ SRS system may deploy airbags without warning and without any collision event or advance dashboard indication.
Reports reviewed to date further indicate that spontaneous airbag deployments may allegedly cause:
– Sudden loud explosive deployment events;
– Temporary loss of visibility;
– Exposure to chemical dust or fumes;
– Hearing-related concerns;
– Occupant distraction or panic; and
– Significant repair costs involving replacement of airbags, sensors, trim components, steering wheel components, and related SRS hardware.
In at least one publicly reported incident referenced in the complaint, a family travelling with children allegedly experienced spontaneous deployment of side airbags while driving on a highway overpass, resulting in roadside stranding and extensive repairs.
Publicly available allegations further indicate that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) opened an investigation into the issue in October 2025 involving a potential population of approximately 441,000 vehicles.
The investigation is also reviewing allegations that Honda received prior consumer complaints and reports concerning spontaneous deployment events before the opening of the government investigation.
Our investigation is ongoing and is being conducted to determine whether the legal requirements under British Columbia’s Class Proceedings Act are met, including whether common issues exist and whether a class proceeding would be the preferable procedure.
If you own or lease a 2018–2022 Honda Odyssey and have experienced spontaneous airbag deployment, unexplained SRS warnings, repeated airbag repairs, or related concerns, you may contact us to share your experience.
