We are investigating reported concerns involving certain BMW vehicles equipped with the B58 Gen 2 (TU1) engine relating to alleged defects affecting the engine oil pump assembly. If your vehicle is affected, you may contact us confidentially and free of charge.

No lawsuit has been filed and no class proceeding has been certified in British Columbia.

BMW B58 Engine Oil Pump Investigation (Detailed)

Our firm is reviewing reported concerns involving certain BMW vehicles equipped with the B58 Gen 2 (TU1) engine relating to alleged defects affecting the engine oil pump assembly and engine lubrication system.

Reports reviewed to date indicate that certain affected vehicles may experience premature oil pump failure, potentially resulting in reduced oil pressure, complete loss of oil pressure, engine damage, or catastrophic engine failure. Reports further suggest that the alleged condition may be associated with a polycarbonate oil-pressure control ring incorporated into certain oil pump assemblies.

If you have experienced oil-pressure warnings, engine noises, oil pump replacement, engine replacement, loss of power, or related concerns, you may contact us confidentially and free of charge. No lawsuit has been filed and no class proceeding has been certified in British Columbia.

Potential Automotive Class Proceeding Under Investigation:

BMW B58 Gen 2 Engine Oil Pump Defect (2019–2021)

Our firm is currently investigating a potential Canada-wide class proceeding, including in British Columbia, concerning certain BMW vehicles equipped with the B58 Gen 2 (TU1) engine, including:

−      2019-2021 BMW 2 Series

−      2019-2021 BMW 3 Series

−      2019-2021 BMW 4 Series

−      2019-2021 BMW 5 Series

−      2019-2021 BMW 7 Series

−      2019-2021 BMW X3

−      2019-2021 BMW X4

−      2019-2021 BMW X5

−      2019-2021 BMW X6

−      2019-2021 BMW X7

According to reports reviewed to date, certain affected vehicles may contain an oil pump assembly incorporating a polycarbonate oil-pressure control ring. It is alleged that repeated thermal cycling, vibration, and material degradation may cause the ring to crack, fracture, or fail over time. Reports reviewed to date indicate that, when this occurs, oil pressure may be substantially reduced or lost entirely.

Reports reviewed to date further indicate that low or no oil pressure may result in accelerated engine wear, damage to internal engine components, bearing damage, connecting rod damage, crankshaft damage, engine seizure, and catastrophic engine failure. Engine replacement costs may exceed $20,000 in some circumstances. Oil pump replacement costs may range from several thousand dollars depending on the vehicle model and extent of related damage.

Reports reviewed to date suggest that affected owners may experience:

−      Low oil-pressure warnings;

−      Check engine lights or warning messages;

−      Engine knocking, ticking, or unusual noises;

−      Reduced engine performance;

−      Sudden loss of power;

−      Engine seizure;

−      Catastrophic engine failure; and

−      Engine replacement.

Reports reviewed to date also indicate that BMW revised the design of the oil pump during the 2021 model year by incorporating a metal oil-pressure control ring in place of the earlier polycarbonate component. The investigation is reviewing whether this design change may be relevant to the reported condition.

Because the reported condition may result in sudden loss of oil pressure and catastrophic engine failure, the investigation is reviewing whether the alleged defect may impair vehicle reliability, safety, value, and expected service life.

This investigation is ongoing and is being conducted to determine whether the legal requirements under British Columbia's Class Proceedings Act are met, including whether common issues exist and whether a class proceeding would be the preferable procedure.

If you own or lease an affected BMW vehicle and have experienced oil-pressure warnings, oil pump replacement, engine failure, engine replacement, or related concerns, you may contact us to share your experience. Providing information is confidential, free of charge, and does not obligate you to retain our firm or participate in any legal proceeding.

This page will be updated as our investigation progresses.
